- reduce the amount of data that is lost when a system fails, eg. up to a whole days data can be lost if a system that is backed up overnight fails. This is no longer acceptable to some businesses.
- reduce the time required to restore a system and data to full operation after a failure. For example, if a Windows server fails it can take anywhere from ½ a day to 2 days to recover - after the hardware has been repaired or replaced. Again, this is no longer acceptable to some businesses.
