Physical Environmental Monitoring

Most businesses invest significant capital in their IT infrastructure, for without this critical IT infrastructure in place they cannot operate efficiently or profitably. When potentially damaging events occur within your IT infrastructure, do you find out before any immediate or hidden long term hardware damage occurs? This sort of hardware damage may not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty if the equipment has been used outside of the vendor’s specified operating conditions.

By simply monitoring the physical environment for temperature and humidity readings that are approaching or outside of your hardware vendor’s operating range, you can take automated action to either;

  1. address the problem through automative corrective measures
  2. begin a graceful shutdown of the systems, starting with less important systems and progressively working through to mission critical systems being shutdown last
  3. alert relevant staff via email or SMS, thereby allowing them to manually intervene and hopefully prevent any hardware damage or data loss.

Depending on the nature of the problem and the size and complexity of your critical IT infrastructure, (c) may not be practical because a large number of systems can take quite some time for a single person to individually touch. In almost all cases the only real option is an automated system that can quickly and effectively take corrective action based on a series of rules and threshold events.

Other important variables that can be measured are;
  • Mains power presence
  • Air flow
  • Smoke Detection
  • Water Detection
  • Door Opening (Room or Rack)
  • Movement, Sound or Light

The cost to detect and alert on these issues is trivial, yet most organizations will fail to act because they are unaware of a cost effective solution. If you are interested in knowing more about how you can put a highly flexible solution into your environment with a complete hardware & software capital cost from as low as $225 ex gst.
